Some 30% fireworks are unsafe
Some 30% of fireworks approved for domestic use are dangerous and have been destroyed, according to figures from the environment ministry’s special firework squad.
Last year only 15% of fireworks examined for stability, explosiveness and composition were found to be unsafe.
This year’s increase is probably due to tougher tests, the inspectors say. In particular, square fireworks known as ‘cake boxes’ are dangerous.
According to the latest figures, police have seized nearly 58,000 kilos of illegal fireworks, almost half the amount seized at the same point last year.
The Dutch traditionally celebrate New Year’s Eve with fireworks.
