Schiphol airport popular for weapons shipments

Large shipments of weapons are still getting through Schiphol Airport despite improved security says Oxfam Novib, which reports 2,000 cases in 2006.

The Netherlands must also check shipments of weapons from friendly countries, the development organisation told news agency ANP on Monday.
It says 30% of shipments in 2006 were ‘very large’. A number of these were shipped on to Israel, Bangladesh, Chili and other destinations which give ’cause for concern’.
The biggest shipper of weapons through Schiphol is the United States. According to Oxfam Novib customs officers do not check these shipments. Nor do they check shipments from other allies like the NATO countries, the EU, Australia, Switzerland, New Zealand and Japan.
