Football clubs consider own tv channel

The Netherlands premier division football clubs are considering launching their own pay television channel as an alternative to the sale of broadcasting rights, league director Alex Tielbeke said on Monday evening.

Tielbeke was speaking at the publication of the league’s invitation to companies to tender for rights to broadcast the 2008/09 season.
‘I cannot deny that money will play an important role in the eventual choice of partner,’ Tielbeke told reporters.
But the quality of programming, innovative ideas and marketing and promotional plans would also be important, he said.
A new tv station could be based on either pay-per-view or subscriptions.
In 1996, efforts to launch a paid-for sports station Sport7 collapsed after just five months.
