Alkmaar football club AZ is out of the UEFA Cup after losing at home to the UK’s Everton 2-3 on Thursday night. This means PSV Eindhoven is the only Dutch team in the last 32 to play in the European competition.

But AZ’s loss is good news for Dick Advocaat, the Dutch trainer of Zenit St Petersburg. The Russian team now goes through to the next round of the UEFA Cup with Everton and Geremany’s Nurenburg.
It is the first time in four years AZ have failed to get through to the third round.
