Police officer prosecuted over shooting

The police officer who shot a man who refused to leave the scene of a fire is to be prosecuted for attempted murder.

The 39-year-old officer asked 43-year-old Jannes Geerts to leave the area three times, then shot him when he refused.
The public prosecution department had refused to pursue the case, arguing that the police officer operated out of necessity.
However, the victim, who claims he was shot six times – the police say three times – pursued his claim via the courts, forcing the trial to take place.
