No cause found for pet shop symptoms

No cause has yet been found for the dizziness, headaches and nausea which led to 24 visitors to a Hoogeveen pet shop being hospitalised on Monday evening.

A further 77 people who had been quarantined in a nearby community centre were allowed home last night.
A spokesman for the government’s health institute RIVM said more details about the mystery illness would be given later on Tuesday. Scientists have already established the victims were not exposed to a biological compound or a virus and are now looking at chemical causes.
Scientists are also looking at whether there is a connection between the outbreak and the death of a caiman crocodile in the shop last weekend.
The area around the pet shop had been sealed off on Monday evening while the cause of the outbreak was investigated.
