Fromer Provo Bronkhorst dies of cancer
The death of Peter Bronkhorst on Friday at the age of 61 had Saturday’s papers turning the clock back to the 1960s and printing black and white pictures of smoke bombs in Amsterdam.
Bronkhorst was a Provo, the Dutch counter-culture movement of the mid-sixties that focused on provoking violent response from the authorities using non-violent means.
His claim to fame came on March 10, 1966 when he hurled a smoke bomb at the coach carrying princess Beatrix and prince Claus on their way to have their marriage blessed.
Bronkhorst later became a drug addict until he fell in love, cleaned up his act and started his own window-cleaning business.
But as the Parool says, he was still a Provo at heart. Just the Saturday before he died Bronkhorst, who was suffering from cancer, was part of a demonstration in Amsterdam againts a ban on the sale of hallucinogenic mushrooms.
