Fines for population registry failings

Local authorities are to be given the power to fine residents who fail to register their whereabouts or give false information.

Junior home affairs minister Ank Bijleveld plans to bring in legislation to give councils more powers next year, a ministry spokesman confirmed on Sunday.
At the moment, everyone living in the Netherlands is required by law to make sure their correct details are recorded in the population registry (GBA).
Some people use false addresses to claim welfare and other social security benefits.
