Finance ministry pays banana import tax
The tax office has agreed to pay import duty on thousands of bananas washed up on the coast of Ameland and Terschelling so they can be sent to local zoos.
A radio station’s scheme to transport the bananas to Emmen zoo seemed set to come unstuck when customs officials said import duty had to be paid, news agency ANP reported.
The bananas come from several containers washed overboard from the freighter Duncan Island earlier this week.
