Plans to build a new high speed rail link between Groningen and the central urban conurbation (Zuiderzeelijn) have been scrapped by the cabinet.
Instead, transport minister Camiel Eurlings will put €2bn of the cash set aside for the project into strengthening the northern economy. The €1bn left from the project’s budget is to be spent on the railway connection between Schiphol airport and Lelystad.
Politicians and business organisations are furious at the decision, the Volkskrant reports on Monday. They accuse the government of betraying an election pledge.
