AZ continue unbroken European run
A 1-0 victory over Greek club Larissa not only brought AZ Alkmaar closer to the next round of the UEFA cup, but gave the team the longest European unbeaten home match record.
The Dutch team has now played 32 home matches in European competitions without losing. The previous record of 31 matches was held by the UK’s Ipswich Town.
Moussa Dembélé snatched victory for AZ on Thursday night, 15 minutes before time. ‘This was the best team we have played this season, including PSV and Ajax,’ said coach Louis van Gaal afterwards.
AZ is now in third place in the pool with four points. The Dutch club next plays Germany’s Nürnberg, which is in fourth place with one point, for a definite place in the next round.
