Ajax move to top after PSV slip-up
Ajax moved to the top of the premier division on Sunday with a convincing 4-2 victory over Roda JC of Kerkrade.
The Amsterdam club profited from a slip-up by PSV. The Eindhoven formation lost 2-1 away to Heerenveen on Saturday, just days after the sudden departure of their coach Ronald Koeman to Valencia.
The other main contender for the title, Rotterdam’s Feyenoord, easily beat De Graafschap of Doetinchem 2-0, moving into second place with the same number of points as Ajax but a worse goal average. PSV are now one point behind their main rivals in third place.
The scene is now set for the head-on clash between Feyenoord and Ajax next Sunday. Feyenoord coach Bert van Marwijk said in a newspaper interview that the teams’ current position at the top of the league would make the game ‘doubly interesting’.
Meanwhile, speculation is building about the successor to Koeman. Martin Jol, the former manager of the English club Tottenham and a Dutchman, is the current favourite to take over the reins at PSV.
But this weekend a new challenger has emerged. According to the Spanish press, Manuel Pellegrini, the coach of Villareal is interested in the position.
