One in five children obese by 2015
Fewer than 10% of primary school pupils take any form of physical exercise for more than 30 minutes a day. And the figure for children between 12 and 17 is under 30%. The result is that one in five kids will be overweight by 2015, according to a report presented on Tuesday.
The report, compiled by comiled by the socio-economic research institute Nicis, says there is a clear link between what local councils offer in the way of sport facilities and activities and the amount of exercise children take.
‘Councils underestimate their role,’ Nicis director Wim Hafkamp told ANP. ‘They need to invest far more in this area.’
