Houkes wins world judo title

Ruben Houkes surprised everyone at the world judo championships in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday by winning the gold medal in the under-60 kg class.

The 28-year-old from Haarlem has always been seen as a good second level fighter, reports Monday’s AD. His win over the Georgian Nestor Khergiani gives him an automatic place at the Olympics in China in 2008.
The Dutch judo team also took home three bronzes.
