Women’s football premier league kicks off

The official Dutch premier league women’s football kicked off on Wednesday night with SC Heerenveen beating FC Twente 3-2. Six teams are in the national league, which shows that women’s football has come of age, says today’s Volkskrant.

The players will retain their official amateur status but will get expenses, says the paper. The league is sponsored by supermarket group Plus and TV station RTL will screen matches.
However the country’s top three clubs – Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord – are not taking part in the women’s premier league.
Football is an extremely popular sport with young Dutch women, second only to hockey, says the paper.
