Sneijder to Real Madrid for €27m
The transfer sum of €27m agreed for the sale of Ajax midfielder Wesley Sneijder to Real Madrid is the biggest ever for a ‘home grown’ player in the Amsterdam football club’s history.
The transfer of the 23-year old Ajax player, which was confirmed on Sunday, ends weeks of speculation. The five year deal is due to be signed later today.
Sneijder was initially set to move to Valencia but the deal was called off after the Spanish club said it would not pay more than €16m for the player.
Then on Friday came an offer of €24m from Real Madrid but the club pulled out when Ajax said it would lower it was only prepared to lower its €30m asking price to €27m.
Sneijder is the third Dutch player to go to Real Madrid following Ruud van Nistelrooij and Royston Drenthe and there is media speculation that Arjen Robben might join the Spanish club too.
Sneijder made his debut for Ajax’s top team in February 2003 and has scored 57 goals in the Amsterdam club’s 180 premier league games.
