New bulb helps birds migrate

Electronics firm Philips and oil and gas company NAM have developed a new type of bird-friendly light bulb for use on oil rigs.

The lamps only beam a limited part of the spectrum, meaning migrating birds are not distracted by illuminated offshore rigs.
Trials on a rig close to the island of Vlieland have proved successful, Philips said.
Some 60 million birds migrate over the North Sea every year, but can become disorientated by rig lights during extreme weather conditions.
