Criminal records for 5% of charity bosses

Some 5% of charity managers have criminal records, according to Wednesday’s Volkskrant. The figure comes from an investigation commissioned by the justice ministry following suspicions that three Islamic organisations were raising money for terrorists.

The survey concluded that 9% of charity managers with an Islamic background had criminal records.
The ministry could not say whether the overall figures reflect the situation in society in general but said that the problem within charities was ‘limited’.
The paper estimates that the Netherlands has around 50,000 philanthropic organisations.
