‘Old’ cyclists need side wheels: bike group
Fitting side wheels onto cycles used by older people could help reduce the growing number of accidents involving this group, says the Cycling Association in today’s Telegraaf.
According to figures from the consumer safety association, 3,400 people over the age of 55 were taken to hospital following a cycle accident in the last five years. And on average 110 old people die every year as a result of a cycle accident.
‘It is increasingly chaotic on the roads and if you bear in mind too that older people often have problems with balance, why shouldn’t you fit side wheels,’ said spokeswoman Arien de Jong.
