No job for half of welfare claimants

Some 40% of people receiving social security payments are unable to work because of physical or psychological problems or because they are too old, according to a report published today by the association of social service directors (Divosa).

The latest Divosa report says this means 123,000 people will need long-term benefit payments. Last year’s report concluded that 50% of welfare recipients would never be able to find jobs.
The number of people dependent on social security payments has fallen from 302,000 at the end of 2006 to 297,000 this spring, said Divosa.
