Members of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee are to visit the US detention camp in Guantanamo Bay in October at the invitation of the US ambassador to the Netherlands, ANP reports.

Despite initial concerns about the visit, only the minor centre-left party D66 has opted out of the trip. D66 party leader Alexander Pechtold said he would not go because the visit was ‘a PR stunt’, pointing out that the Netherlands has repeatedly called for the camp to be closed.
During the visit, MPs will not be allowed to talk to prisoners but can speak to guards. Red Cross officials are prepared to talk to MPs away from the camp grounds, ANP said.
The trip may also be combined with a visit to Capitol Hill in Washington and the United Nations headquarters in New York.
