Ministers set for 10% pay rise

Ministers should get a 10% pay rise this year, says home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst who is to make the recommendation at Friday’s cabinet meeting. Ministers’ salary is currently €158.000 according to the ANP news agency.

The proposed increase is lower than the 30% agreed by the former cabinet but opposition Socialist Party is against the rise. ‘Simply ridiculous. Politicians should set a good example and frreeze their salaries,’ Socialist MP Harry van Bommel is quoted as saying in today’s Volkskrant.
A special committee is looking at whether ministers should get a further hefty rise to bring their salaries more in line with private sector pay rates.
