Leaders blamed for VVD election woes

The report into the Liberal party (VVD)’s poor performance in last year’s election blames the entire party leadership, and in particular the leadership contest between Mark Rutte and Rita Verdonk.

That event gave the impression the VVD was more polarised than it was, and Verdonk’s press conference after the election at which she emphasised her personal support was a ‘low point,’ claims the report, by former housing minister Sybilla Dekker.
Verdonk denies that the meeting had been an attempt to take over the party leadership.
Both she and Rutte said they supported the reports findings.
