First day of summit ‘business-like’ says PM

The first round of the EU summit in Brussels was ‘extremely business-like,’ prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende told news agency ANP.

The first day’s talks folded at midnight and will resume with bilateral talks between individual member states and current chairman Germany this morning.
German chancellor Angela Merkel said there had been no breakthrough at yesterday’s talks. Poland’s demand that it have more say over EU affairs because so many of its citizens had been killed during WWII was not discussed, Balkenende said.
