Paper demands firework disaster report
The Twente newspaper Tubantia has asked the court in Almelo to force justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin to release the state investigator’s report into the Enschede firework disaster.
The paper suspects the report, drawn up in 2004, contains evidence on whether the police team that investigated the fire tried to mislead the court.
The court ruled in January 2007 that the minister should release the report, but he has so far not reacted.
The Enschede firework disaster of May 13, 2000 was triggered by a fire at the SE Fireworks depot. That fire led to an enormous explosion that left 23 dead, including four firemen, and 947 injured. About 2000 homes were damaged or destroyed and the damage was estimated at €500m. The cause of the fire has never been fully explained.
