Ajax win cup after penalty shoot-out
Amsterdam’s Ajax kept their nerve better than their opponent AZ of Alkmaar winning a thrilling penalty shoot-out 8-7 to claim the football national league cup on Sunday evening. Veteran midfielder Edgar Davids coolly slotted home the eigth penalty, after Ryan Donk of AZ had missed his.
The game had ended with a one all draw after extra time. The victory will make good Ajax’s season after the club narrowly lost the premier division title to PSV of Eindhoven last week.
AZ, however, will be asking themselves how they have ended up with nothing, having dominated the second half of the final with Ajax reduced to 10 men after midfielder Gabri was sent off for punching.
Last week AZ also squandered the best chance to win the league, losing to Excelsior of Rotterdam.
