Speed cameras to be cut by 12%

The number of speed traps on Dutch roads are to be cut by around 12%, the justice ministry’s traffic department confirmed on Thursday. Speed cameras in locations where there is no danger to safety will be removed, traffic officer Koos Spee told news agency ANP.

There are more than 1,700 speed cameras in the Netherlands and the justice department is currently in the process of taking over responsibility for these from local authorities. At the same time it will decide whether or not a specific camera is necessary. Originally the traffic department thought 25% of the speed cameras would be removed.
