PSV wobble as Ajax closes gap
Amsterdam’s Ajax on Sunday narrowed the gap with league leaders PSV of Eindhoven to three points with four games still to play in the premiership.
The Amsterdam football club capitalised on PSV’s slip-up on Saturday night. Injury-hit PSV could only manage a draw away to NAC of Breda, and then only thanks to a late equaliser by striker Jefferson Farfan.
Ajax meanwhile dispensed with third-from-bottom Heracles of Almelo 3-0.
PSV manager Ronald Koeman has admitted that the situation is difficult with four games to go. PSV have a tougher run-in to the end of the season than Ajax.
Henk ten Cate, Ajax’s manager, says the title race is now open although to win the premier league Ajax have to win all their coming games and PSV lose one.
Elsewhere, Alkmaar’s AZ kept up their challenge for the title with an easy 2-0 victory against lowly-placed RKC of Waalwijk. AZ are now five points behind PSV.
FC Twente, the surprise of the season, secured a place in the Champion League play-offs, beating FC Utrecht 3-0. FC Twente are now fourth in the league and can no longer be caught by sixth-placed SC Heerenveen. The play-offs are for the four runners-up to the league winners.
Fifth-placed Feyenoord, who have to battle it out with SC Heereneveen for the remaining Champions League play-off spot, ended their recent poor run by beating Arnhem’s Vitesse 1-0 at the weekend. This was the Rotterdam club’s first victory in five games.
