New royal baby grabs attention

Congratulations have been flooding in to princess Máxima and crown prince Willem Alexander following the birth of their third daughter last night. The baby, the eighth grandchild for queen Beatrix, was born at 9.56pm and weighed in at 4.1kgs. Willem Alexander showed off the baby to the press and waiting crowds early on Wednesday morning.

Gynaecologist Maddy Smeets told reporters the birth had proceeded easily and Máxima had delivered the baby ‘royally’. Asked how the prince had behaved during the birth, Smeets said: ‘I enjoyed his sense of humour’.
The baby’s name has not yet been announced.
Máxima was admitted to the Bronovo hospital in The Hague, where both her other daughters were born, on Tuesday afternoon.
Queen Beatrix now has seven granddaughters and just one grandson. She herself had three sons and is the oldest of four daughters.
