Betuwe freight railway to open in June

The freight-only Betuwe railway line between Rotterdam and Germany is finally due to open on June 16, over 10 years after the project was approved by the government.

The last government had to delay the Betuwe line twice because of technical problems, pushing up expenditure by €22.7m. The final cost of the project is over €4.6bn.
The line will not be fully operational until 2008 when capacity is expected to be around 50 trains a week in both directions.
