MPs back ban on hallucinogenic mushrooms

A majority of MPs would back a total ban on the sale of hallucinogenic mushrooms, following the death of a 17-year-old French tourist last week. The sale of dried mushrooms is banned but fresh ones are widely available in so-called ‘smart shops’.

The girl’s parents have blamed the Dutch state for her death because it allows the sale of the drugs. She apparently jumped off a bridge.
Health minister Ab Klink has asked health institute RIVM to investigate the possible damaging effect of mushrooms – known as paddos in Dutch. MPs are due to debate drugs laws on Thursday.
