Mist causes travel chaos in the east (UPDATE)

Thick mist has caused chaos on the roads this morning, particularly in the east of the country where the A1 motorway by Hengelo is now closed in both directions following two accidents.

Earlier this morning a lorry carrying turkeys overturned causing a pile up involving four other vehicles at Enter on the a1. One person was killed and nine taken to hospital in the accident. A few hours later another accident involving a tanker on the same stretch of road closed it off in the opposite direction.
Part of the N50 between Kampen and Hattemerbroek is also closed as a result of a multi-car pile-up.
According to the motoring organisation ANWB mist has reduced visibility in some places to less than 30 metres.
And a motorist had a lucky escape when his car was hit by a train on a railway crossing between Apeldoorn en Deventer this morning. The driver had not seen the train approaching because of thick mist. However the incident led to delays of around an hour for train passengers between the two cities.
