Give parents nationality choice, say MPs

Christian Democrat (CDA) and Labour (PvdA) MPs have called for an end to the practice of automatically giving babies the nationalities of both parents, arguing that parents should be free to choose for Dutch nationality only.

Mirjam Sterk (CDA) and Jeroen Dijsselbloem (PvdA) are drawing up their own bill. They base their case on the experiences of VVD (Liberal) MP Ibo Gülsen, born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and Turkish father.
Gülsen was furious when his own daughter was registered has having Turkish as well as Dutch nationality ‘when she has nothing to do with the country’.
