Socialists and VVD unite in Senate

The right-wing Liberals (VVD) and Socialist Party say they will form a block to stop the new government imposing an extra tax on rich pensioners, if the two parties gain a majority of seats in the new Senate.

Opinion polls say there is a good chance the two parties will control a majority of the 75 seats in the Senate. The anti-immigration PVV is not taking part in the election, and pundits say its vote is likely to go to the VVD. The new Senate will be elected in May.
