‘Maxima should give up Argentine passport’

Princess Maxima should end her dual nationality status and give up her Argentine passport, outgoing integration minister Rita Verdonk told TV current affairs show Nova on Friday evening. Maxima became Dutch in 2001 through a fast-track process ahead of her wedding to Crown Prince Willem-Alexander.

Maxima still holds Argentine nationality, which cannot technically be renounced. She has also said in the past that she plans to raise her children to speak both Dutch and Spanish.
The Netherlands is currently embroiled in a row over dual nationality after it emerged two junior ministers in the new government have second passports. MPs and ministers are allowed to have dual nationality but Verdonk and the anti-immigration party PVV would like to see the practise stopped.
Ministers should give a clear signal to the public at large that they are opting to be Dutch, Verdonk said.
