Police clear out squatted fort
Riot police using tanks, and according to some reports, Afghan war veterans, today completed the eviction of squatters from an abandoned fort in Gelderland.
Some 10 squatters were still barricaded into Fort Pannderden, which was built in 1869 as part of the Hollandse Waterlinie (Dutch Water Line) defences, on Wednesday morning. The fort was squatted in 2000 after being empty for several decades. Its owners, the state forestry commission Stadsbosbeheer want to turn it into a museum. Thirteen squatters and two supporters were arrested yesterday.
