KPN ordered to keep network open
KPN has been told by telecom regulator Opta to keep its existing network open to competitors for five more years, the Financieele Dagblad reports.
KPN is planning to switch to a new glass fibre network, meaning its 1,300 existing local exchanges would become redundant. KPN’s fixed telephony competitors, such as Orange and Wanadoo, use the local exchanges to link their networks through to individual households. The new KPN network will involve setting up 200 super and 28,000 street-level exchanges. KPN will then have to allow its competitors to chose at what level to link.
