Emergency debate after disturbances
Amsterdam’s mayor Job Cohen and police chiefs are meeting this afternoon to discuss last night’s disturbances in the east of the city.
Groups of angry youngsters from the Morrocan community took to the streets following the fatal stabbing of a man earlier in the evening. The youngsters suspected the stabbing to be the work of a man of Surinam descent and went looking for revenge. The youths threw stones, broke windows and taunted police in the neighbourhoods around Muider and Amstel stations. Local councillor Fatima Elatik has appealed for calm.
