Five people have been arrested in the Drenthe town of Coevorden after riot police were drafted in to restore order on Saturday night.

Video footage shows how a group of several dozen people made a bonfire at a crossroads and gathered round to watch, but according to the police, vandals also damaged windows, letter boxes and traffic signs.

Riot police were eventually forced to intervene around 1.30am, arresting five several men in their late 20s. More arrests have not been ruled out, police said.

According to local broadcaster RTV Drenthe, there has been trouble in the Poppenhare district of Coevorden for several nights in a row, including a street brawl on New Year’s Eve itself.

Elsewhere, there was also sporadic trouble. In Rotterdam a firework bomb was thrown through the window of council offices in the Lombardijen district, and the fire brigade were called into put out the flames.

A number of homes above the office had to be evacuated.

Burns

In Gelderland, two teenage boys received serious burns in two separate incidents involving fireworks, on in Nijmegen and one in Arnhem.

‘We often see serious injuries at New Year, but this is two days later,’ a police spokesman told the AD.
