Ministers have put together a €2bn package of infrastructure improvements and new housing projects in their latest multi-year spatial planning plan (MIRT).

The MIRT projects cover the entire country and involve work on roads, railways, tunnesl and bridges as well as public transport improvements.

They include a high-speed train link to the north of the country, road improvements to the A7 and A8 between Amsterdam and Noord-Holland and a 9,000 new home development near Utrecht with its own railway station.

The redevelopment of Schiphol’s railway station is also among the projects.

‘We need to take action to improve our roads, railways and public transport because they are becoming increasingly busy,’ infrastructure minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen said. ‘We are focusing on the major blackspots and making sure all regions are easily accessible.

Some of the work is slated to start next year, but other plans still have to be put out to consultation, the minister said.

Not all the the investment comes from central government, and local and regional councils have also been closely involved in the development and funding strategies.
