Foreign minister Stef Blok has described the death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as ‘good news’ for both the victims of IS terror and for the security of Europe and the Netherlands.

Blok made the comments on Twitter shortly after US president Donald Trump announced that Baghdadi had died by blowing himself and three of his children up by detonating a suicide belt in a tunnel.

But despite his death, the threat presented by IS is not over and the Netherlands will continue to ‘contribute to the fight for justice’, Blok said.

Other European leaders have described Baghadadi’s death as a major blow to IS but warn that the battle against the organisation continues.
