Amsterdam football club Ajax failed to take advantage of a PSV draw and move top of the table on Sunday.

PSV, just two points ahead of Ajax in the Eredivisie, booked a surprise 2-2 draw against Emmen on Sunday afternoon, clearing the way for the Amsterdammers to move into the top slot. Emmen are currently 15th in the league.

But Ajax, without regular keeper Andre Onana who dropped out in the warm up, could do more than draw 4-4 against Heerenveen in the later time slot. A win would have put them top of the table on goal difference.

‘We were motivated but we were overconfident,’ coach Erik ten Hag told broadcaster NOS after the match. ‘We lost against ourselves.’

Ajax take on arch rivals and third-placed Feyenoord next week, while PSV meet Groningen.
