Dutch swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo has set a world record in the 50m freestyle at a swimming World Cup event in Berlin.

Kromowidjojo reclaimed the world record she lost last week by swimming the distance in 22.93, making her the first woman ever to dip under 23 seconds.

But there was disappointment for middle distance runner Sifan Hassan at the athletics world championships in London. The favourite for the 1,500 metres, Hassan finished in fifth place after failing to overtake the leaders in a sprint finish.

A distraught Hassan said after the race ‘I don’t know, I don’t know. What can I say?’

In London on Wednesday, Dutch sprinter Dafne Schippers starts her campaign to retain her world title in the 200m.
