Thunder and lightning bring late summer heatwave to an end

The late summer heatwave was brought to an end by heavy storms over large parts of the Netherlands on Thursday evening. The KNMI weather bureau had issued a code yellow warning for the south of the country.

The A67 was particularly hard hit during a cloud burst, the traffic information service VID said. Train services between Boxmeer and Venlo were also halted for a time because of damage caused by lightning.

In Deurne in Brabant, a number of trees were brought down and several street were hit by flash floods.

In Markelo in Overijssel a farm with a thatched roof was destroyed in a fire caused by lightning. The family managed to get out in time, local media reported.

The KNMI says it will be mainly dry on Friday but there could be more storms in the west in the evening.
