Economy shows stronger growth
The Dutch economy grew strongly in the second quarter of 2010, mainly through increased exports. Taken over a year, the increase was 2.1%, compared with 0.6% in the previous quarter.
It is the second quarter to show growth following five quarters of negative growth since 2008, central statistics agency CBS reported on Friday.
Exports showed a 12% increase and industry grew by 8%. Trade and transport profited from this and grew by 7% and 6% respectively, says the CBS.
However, growth in consumption and investment is still weak. Households spent 0.7% more than a year ago, but this is accounted for by higher gas prices and the purchase of new cars. Investments in infrastructure were much lower, although they showed an increase on the previous quarter.
The number of new jobs went up by 17,000, says the CBS. This is the first increase in five quarters.
