How to cut government spending by 20%

Increasing the own risk element in health insurance to €775, cutting the minimum wage by 10% and reducing basic welfare benefits by 10% – these are just some of the ways the government can get its spending under control, according to leaks from government working parties.

The 20 government working parties set up last year to overhaul all aspects of government spending are due to report back later on Thursday.
Other suggestions include reducing the basic health insurance package, bringing in a €5 fee for visits to the family doctor and increasing social housing rents in popular areas, Nos reports.
Other suggestions published by the Telegraaf include a special kilometre tax for lorrys, a rush-hour tax for motorists using the roads at peak periods and a cut in road projects.
The working groups were set up last September to look at ways of generating €35bn in structural savings. Their reporting period has been speeded up because of the fall of the government in February.
