Roman relics get listed status

A number of Roman remains in the Netherlands, including forts, a wrecked ship, a temple and an aqueduct are to be given protected status, culture minister Ronald Plasterk said during a visit to archaeological museum Museon in The Hague on Thursday.

A recent analysis of the current protected building list showed that Roman artefacts were under-represented, news agency ANP said.
Much of the land now known as the Netherlands were conquered by Roman forces under Julius Caesar in around 58 BC but Friesland and Groningen in the north remained outside Roman rule. The most import Roman towns were Utrecht, Nijmegen, and Maastricht.
