Councillor taken hostage in Almelo

Police have surrounded the town hall in Almelo, where an armed man is believed to be holding a number of people hostage.


According to the website of local paper Tubantia, one of those being held is Almelo councillor Bert Kuiper.
The situation developed at the end of Monday morning when a man, thought to be the owner of grand café De Rechter, left the town hall and set his car alight. He then took a gun and returned to the building. The café is also on fire, says Tubantia.
Police have cordoned off Almelo’s central square and the town hall. At 2pm around 50 people were freed bu an unknown number remain inside the building, police said.
