Live from the Met

The final part of the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Wagner's Ring cycle, Götterdämmerung, comes to a close with the lovers being torn apart by fate. It is directed by Robert Lepage and conducted by James Levine, with Deborah Voight as Brünnhilde and Gary Lehman as Siegfried.

National Touring Opera

One of the great weepies in the opera repertoire, La Traviata by Verdi is based on Alexandre Dumas' novel La dame aux camélias and is the story of the courtesan Violetta who dies of consumption just as she is reunited with her lover. This production is directed by Monique Wagemakers and conducted by Robbert van Steijn.

Rimsky-Korsakov's The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya is a fanciful fairytale and also a parable on repression and political conceit. It has Kristine Opolais as Fevroniya and Robert Holl as the prince who marries her. The conductor is Marc Albrecht.

One of Handel's lesser-known operas, Deidamia tells how Achilles grows up dressed as a girl at the court of King Lycomedes as protection against a prophecy he will not survive the Trojan War. He falls in love with the King's daughter, Deidamia, but when Ulysses arrives in search of him, things become complicated. The dire3ctor is David Alden and the conductor Ivor Bolton.

Gluck's L'ivrogne corrigé, which is sung in French with Dutch surtitles, is a rumbustious affair about the battle of the sexes, with buffoonish and drunken men and battleaxe wives. It tells how Mathurine saves her niece Colette from being married off to her husband Mathurin's drinking buddy Lukas.

It is conducted by Frédérique Chauvet and directed by Alain Patiès.

The Magic Flute is one of Mozart's great operas and full of wonderful melodies. Among the cast are Martijn Sanders and Saskia Voorbach as Papageno and Papagena. The director is Bruno Berger-Gorski and the conductor Per-Otto Johansson.
