Minister survives no-confidence motion over Olympic plans

Sports minister Edith Schippers survived a no-confidence motion in parliament on Tuesday night, as MPs criticised her for not keeping them properly informed about plans to stage the 2028 Olympics.

Socialist party MPs accused the minister of concealing the €8bn cost of staging the games.
Schippers denied withholding information and said the €8bn figure is one-sided because it does not take the benefits of staging the games into account. The figure was calculated by finance ministry civil servants.
GroenLinks, Labour (PvdA), the SP and the pro-animal party PvdD supported the no-confidence motion, which was not enough to ensure a majority.
The Dutch Olympics committee has called on the minister to stop discussing staging the event until 2016 because of the growing anti-Olympic sentiment.
